Post Doc Primate Diseases, Max-Plack-Institutes, Leipzig, Germany

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) is the central federal institution responsible for disease control and prevention and is therefore the central federal reference institution for both applied and response-orientated research as well as for the Public Health Sector.

The research group „Emerging Zoonoses“ has available a postition at Post Doc level (according to TVöD)

Our group investigates primate diseases in tropical Africa with focus on pathogen transmission between non-human primates and humans. We are also investigating other species such as bats or arthropods as potential vectors and reservoirs for new pathogens. Our work ranges from field investigations to laboratory work using a broad range of up-to-date methods, including those used for the discovery of unknown viruses and bacteria.
We are an international team of biologists, veterinarians and biotechnologists. The projects are carried out in close collaboration with the Department of Primatology, Max-Planck-Institute for evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig.

Tasks:
· Laboratory analyses for new and unknown viruses, further development of methods for the discovery of pathogens
· Supervision of laboratory work of PhD - and Diploma students
· Field work is possible depending on previous experience in the field

Requirements
mandatory:
· PhD or similar in Biology, Biotechnology, Veterinary Medicine or similar degree
· Experience in diagnostics including PCR, serology and cell cultures
· Written and oral English language proficiency

beneficial but not mandatory:
· Experience in virus discovery methods
· French and/or German language skills
· Field experience and familiarity with primate diseases and ecology
· Experience in grant writing and reviewing
· Experience in project management

Duration of position: from February 2010 on until December 2011 with possible extension
